📑 Report – Survey for Tubewell, CO Meetings and Collection of Water/Soil Samples – 26–27 May 2025

“RBWRP conducted tubewell surveys, CO meetings, and water/soil sample collection in May 2025 to strengthen groundwater management, climate‑smart agriculture, and community water governance in Balochistan.”

🎯 Purpose

• Assess tubewell functionality and groundwater availability.
• Conduct Community Organization (CO) meetings for participatory governance.
• Collect water and soil samples for quality testing and sustainable agriculture planning.

Team including Mr. Hamza, Mr. Yousaf Kakar, along with village activist and Mr. Muhammad Saleem, survey for tubewell where we collected samples of water from different locations and collected GIS location as well. The underground water level is noted at 250 to 350 foot.

🔬 Observations

• Tubewell surveys revealed variable groundwater levels across sites.
• Communities expressed concerns about water scarcity and equitable distribution.
• Soil samples indicated low organic matter and need for composting.
• Women actively participated in CO meetings, highlighting household water challenges.

The Focus Group Discussions with community held in Taftan focusing on community strengthening and support women in a way to organize disciplined Community Organization, in addition it was requested to women to use less water by adopting a habit by not wasting water. A brief introduction was given to community about the new technology of High Efficiency Irrigation System and Hydroponics through which more crop can be produced while using less water. Women said that they will request Haji Qadir Bux to install the new technology in the land for crop production and if water is provided to their houses through pipe then they can cultivate vegetable and fodder for their livestock.

• Consensus on the importance of climate‑smart agriculture and water conservation.
• COs adopted transparent record‑keeping practices.
• Women nominated for leadership roles in water governance committees.

We took samples from three other tubewells where the water quality was better and belongs to Mr. Saleem. Mr. Hamza was very cooperative in getting the samples.  Women suggested that if water is delivered to them at Killi Naseebullah by installing pipelines covering approximately a distance of 7 kilometers, then they can have quality water for use.

⚠️ Challenges

• Limited awareness of groundwater recharge techniques.
• Resistance to shifting from traditional irrigation methods.
• Need for stronger coordination with provincial authorities.

All Women of the community are poor and work as labor on the land owned by Haji Qadir Bux who also own a tube well and supply water to community even though the water is saltish. Haji Qadir Bux has installed water filtration plant as well, but it is out of order due to some technical problem which requires 50 to 100 thousand to fix it. Women informed us that the water is wasted during rain as there is no way to store the running rainwater for later use.  

✅ Recommendations

• Provide refresher trainings on water‑efficient irrigation and soil fertility management.
• Strengthen COs with bilingual (Urdu + English) training materials.
• Promote organic farming and composting practices.
• Integrate findings into RBWRP’s Provincial Water Resources Master Plan.

Every 4 to 8 women have livestock, but rangeland is totally dry due to drought. Mostly there are two crops Wheat and Khajoor, which can be promoted through value chain. Following are the names of famous Khajoor: (1) Tam Kande (2) Sharifa (3) Alala (4) Rabi. Women requested to give training on packing. Main Spices are “Balochi Name”: (1) Jarr (2) Jarr Laradagh (3) Hispusted (4) Tagass. Gass Trees are grown locally as it grows very fast and people use it as a fuel wood.

📢 Conclusion

The May 2025 survey and CO meetings highlighted the urgent need for groundwater management, soil fertility improvement, and gender‑inclusive governance in Balochistan. RBWRP will continue to support communities with training, monitoring, and participatory decision‑making.

Women farmers should be given training on the use of HEIS, Rain Water Harvesting, Rangeland Management and Hydroponic so that they save water while produce more vegetable through Kitchen Gardening. Women showed interest in working to grow vegetable and use techniques to save water. Awareness raising session are extremely needed.
